ANU International students at capacity

Source: Australian Financial Review

The vice chancellor of The Australian National University said that while Australian universities relied on international students, research would suffer if numbers continued to grow.

Professor Brian Schmidt said he had decided not to grow ANU any larger which meant limiting the number of international as well as domestic students. This was because growth beyond a certain point compromised the balance between research and teaching.

“I’m
not growing ANU anymore. If we continue to grow something is going to suffer.
We need to continue as a teaching and a research university. But I won’t get
better if I get bigger.”

Professor Brian Schmidt: “We are going to have to be selective.”
